Customs and duty-free: what you can bring into the DR
Allowances, the red and green channel, and the items that cause questions at SDQ.
Updated: 2026-09-11
Short answer
Dominican customs allows personal effects plus a modest allowance of alcohol, tobacco and gifts per adult traveller. Everything is X-rayed on the way out of baggage claim. Declare cash above the published threshold, drones, commercial quantities and professional equipment; keep the receipt for anything new and expensive.
The green lane is the normal one
Tourists with clothes, a laptop, a camera and gifts pass straight through. The scanner flags dense blocks, large quantities of the same item and unusual electronics.
Allowances change from time to time, so treat the official Aduanas page as the source of truth rather than a forum post. What does not change: commercial quantities are not a tourist allowance.
Items that get questions
Drones, satellite phones, large medical devices and multiple sealed phones or laptops. Bring documentation and expect a short conversation, not a problem.
Food: sealed commercial snacks are fine, fresh meat and plants are not. Prescription medicine should travel in its original box with the prescription.
On the way home
Rum and cigars are the usual souvenirs. Buy them airside if you have hand luggage only, because liquids bought in town go in the checked bag. Your own country's allowance, not the Dominican one, decides what you may take in.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to declare cash?
Yes, above the published threshold (commonly USD 10,000 equivalent). Declaring is free; not declaring is the problem.
Can I bring a drone?
Usually yes as personal equipment, but declare it and check current civil aviation rules before flying it.
Is duty-free cheaper at SDQ?
For rum and cigars it is competitive; for perfume and electronics it usually is not.
Will the driver wait if customs stops me?
Yes. Waiting inside the terminal is included; we wait until you come out.
Can we stop to buy rum on the way to the airport?
One short stop is normally free — tell the driver at pickup so the timing still works.
