Public transport from SDQ — buses, guaguas and the metro

What exists, what it costs, and why almost no arriving traveller uses it.

Short answer

There is no metro station and no scheduled airport bus at Las Américas. The only cheap option is walking out to the highway and flagging an eastbound or westbound guagua, which is impractical with luggage, does not run reliably at night, and drops you far from most hotels. The Santo Domingo metro is excellent, but it starts in the city, not at the airport.

Guaguas on the coastal highway

Minibuses run the Las Américas highway between Boca Chica, San Pedro and the city. Fares are a couple of dollars. You board at the roadside outside the airport perimeter, they stop constantly, and luggage space is whatever is left.

The metro, once you are in the city

Two lines, clean, air-conditioned, about 20 pesos a ride, and genuinely useful along the Máximo Gómez and Duarte corridors. Great for getting around; irrelevant for the airport.

Long-distance buses

Caribe Tours and Expreso Bávaro run comfortable intercity coaches, but their terminals are in the city, so you still need a car from the airport first. For a group of three or more, our fixed price to Santiago ($155) or Bávaro ($240) is competitive with buying separate bus tickets plus the connections.
