Rent a car if you plan several days of independent touring outside the capital. For a hotel stay in Santo Domingo, a resort week or a one-way trip to another region, a fixed-price private transfer is cheaper once you count insurance, the security deposit, fuel, tolls and hotel parking — and it removes night driving on unlit rural roads.
What the rental really costs
The headline daily rate is not the number to compare. Add mandatory local liability insurance, a credit-card hold that is often US$1,000–2,000, fuel, tolls on the Coral and Duarte highways, and paid parking in Piantini or the colonial city.
Driving here, honestly
Dominican traffic is fast, informal and full of motorcycles. Highways are good; secondary roads are dark, unmarked and shared with pedestrians and animals after sunset. Visitors who have driven in Latin America are usually fine; first-timers arriving at 11 pm are not.
The hybrid most of our clients use
Take a private transfer for the airport legs and the long regional hops, then rent locally for the two or three days you actually want a car. You skip the airport counter queue, the night drive and the deposit for most of the trip. A Zona Colonial transfer is $35; a Samaná run is $275.

No. The colonial city is walkable, the metro is safe and cheap, and apps work well inside the city. A car is mainly a parking problem downtown.

No. You pay the driver at the end of the ride in US dollars, Dominican pesos or euros. There is no deposit and no card charge when you book.
Is the price per person or per vehicle?
Per vehicle, for 1–6 passengers, including tolls and taxes. Larger groups are quoted with additional vehicles at the same fixed zone rate.
