The approach road

The southern end of the Colonial Zone is reached from Avenida George Washington rather than the riverside, so we come off the highway, cross the Ozama, then swing along the Malecón and turn up into Duarte. The facade is a heavy stone wall with an arched wooden door and a small nameplate, set among ordinary neighbourhood shopfronts.

From the SDQ exit to your door

  1. 1Name-sign meet just outside customs at SDQ Terminal A.
  2. 2Highway to the Máximo Gómez toll, then the Duarte bridge — around 25 minutes of the drive.
  3. 3Along the Malecón past the obelisk and up Calle Duarte into the old city.
  4. 4Stop at the arched door on Duarte; the driver rings and hands your bags into the courtyard.

Where the car stops

Straight at the door on Calle Duarte. The street takes a car easily here, so drop-off is quicker than on the cobbled northern lanes.

Departure: when to leave the hotel

Three hours before an international flight; for an 08:00 departure the car is at the door at 04:50. The guest house can leave a breakfast tray out if you tell them the night before.

What is around it

Parque Colón and El Conde are a six-minute walk uphill; the Mercado Modelo and the Duarte shopping streets start at the door, which makes this the least touristy corner of the zone.

Dispatch notes

  • · The courtyard is up two stone steps; tell us if you need help with heavy cases.
  • · Cheaper zone price than Bávaro or Cap Cana, and one of the shortest city runs we do.
